LIMA, Ohio - The men's and women's tennis seasons came to a close this weekend with two heartbreaking losses in the NAIA Unaffliated Regional Tournament in Lima, Ohio. The men lost on Friday to arch-rival Aquinas 5-1 while the women fell in the championship match to the hosts Racers 5-4. Both teams had their best seasons in school history.
Men - Friday - 5-1 loss to Aquinas
Davenport ran up against the No. 13 team in the NAIA in the regional semifinal and was handed their third loss of the year against the Saints. Aquinas took the first two doubles matches but the Panthers got their first point at No. 3 behind the duo of
Keaton Briggs and Mattheus Carvalho.
The Saints then picked up three straight wins in the first three singles matches to close out the Panthers 5-1.
DU will graduate
Victor Roland as its lone senior from 2011-12 and the Panthers end their season with a .500 record of 13-13.
Women - Saturday - 5-4 Loss to UNOH
In the third match in three weeks against the rival Racers, Davenport was unable to pull out the dramatics to earn their first ever bid to the NAIA National Tournament as they fell by the slimest of margins 5-4. DU again fell behind 2-1 in the doubles play for the second straight match but recovered by winning at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to take a 3-2 lead.
UNOH picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to retake the lead with the Panthers winning at No. 2 to tie the match but the host Racers got the much needed point at No. 5 to win.
Final results of each match were not available from the host school at the time of release.
Davenport ends their season with a school record 21 wins compared to just 6 losses.
