HOLBROOK, N.Y. - Davenport hung on for a 8-7 win Friday night against #7 Briarcliffe. The Panthers overcame a three goal deficit just 2:07 into the game and playing in a hostile environment for the win. Davenport will be in action again on Sunday against #13 SCAD (Ga.).
To say the Panthers didn't get off to the start they wanted would be an understatement. The Bulldogs of Briarcliffe jumped out to a three goal lead just over two minutes into game. The Panthers responded with a pair of quick unassisted goals by
Lyle Parks and
Jordan Richtsmeier to cut the lead to one. After another Briarcliffe goal,
Chapin White scored with seven seconds remaining in the quarter off a pass from
Taylor Keyworth to bring the Panthers within one.
White scored his second goal of the game four minutes into the second period after a pass from Richtsmeier to even up the game. But once again the Bulldogs wouldn't give in and scored to retake the lead with 9:27 left in the half. Three minutes later,
Kyle Anguilm scored his second goal of the season to send the game into the half tied at 5-5.
Davenport controlled the first several minutes of the third quarter.
Dominic Boggiano gave the Panthers their first lead when he scored off a pass from
Kyle Healy. Five minutes later,
Lyle Parks scored a man up goal off a feed from Richtsmeier to push the Panthers lead to two.
Nathaniel Adkins then found Boggiano who netted what turned out to be the game winning goal with 4:52 left in the third.
Briarcliffe scored one goal near the end of the third and another halfway through the fourth quarter to close within one. With a couple minutes left in the fourth, the Panthers turned the ball over in the Bulldogs end giving them another chance. But Davenport held off Briarcliffe and overcame a late penalty that put Davenport a man down for the last thirty seconds of the game.
Alexis Buque allowed seven goals and made eight saves in the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. After allowing three goals in the opening two minutes, the Panthers defense held Briarcliffe to four goals over the last 57:53.
Davenport will be in action again on Sunday at 12:00 PM when they take on #13 Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) in Holbrook, N.Y.
Post-Game Quotes - Head Coach Bob Clarkson
"Ten penalties is too many, we will not win many games with 10 penalties. Today we didn't have an answer for their faceoff guy. I'm very happy with our man-down play, our man-down defense was terrific. We got three goals out of our second midfield and defense midfield which is a good day especially when we only scored eight goals.”
