EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the last regular season match of the year Davenports women's tennis defeated Northwestern Ohio 6-3 to clinch the No.1 seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. The men's played UNOH tough but were not able to walk away with any wins on the day.
Women's Tennis
Davenport jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles thanks to the top two doubles pairs. Sisters
Diana Favela and
Denisse Favela picked up a win in the No.1 doubles match 8-2.
Stephanie Fortney and
Kristi Kuzdal picked up the Panthers second point by winning the No.2 doubles match 8-3. UNOH pulled within one point after
Angelica Woods and
Kelly Todd lost a close match 8-6.
The Favela twins came out and gave the Panthers a comfortable 4-1 lead after both made quick work of their singles matches. Diana won the No.1 match 6-0, 6-2 while Denisse won the No.2 match 6-1, 6-2. Northwestern Ohio narrowed the gap to 4-2 after they picked up a win in No.4 singles match. Moments later Moments later
Stephanie Fortney secured the win for the Panthers as she won the No.3 match 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
Angelica Woods picked up the final win for the Panthers in the No.5 match, winning 6-4, 6-1.
The Lady Panthers finished the year on a seven game win streak and finished with a 18-5 overall record. Davenport win 4-0 in conference play and will be the No.1 seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. Today's win improved the lady Panthers home record to 9-0 on the year.
Men's Tennis
Davenport's men's tennis had a difficult task on hand Saturday as they took on No. 23 Northwestern Ohio. The Panthers started off by dropping the No.1 doubles match 8-5. Davenport tried to rebound with the remaining two doubles matches and dropped two very close matches.
Keaton Briggs and Matteus Carvalho fell in the N0.2 match in the tie breaker 7-5. The No.3 pairing of
Eric Pell and
Tyler Chambers took their match into the tie breaker as well and lost 8-6.
Northwestern's depth was too much to for the Panthers to handle. The Racers went on to sweep the singles matches, winning all in straight sets.
The Panthers finished the year with a 12-10 record and finished 2-2 in conference play. Next time the Panthers take the courts will be in the WHAC Tournament on April 20.
