SALINE, Mich. – Davenport fell Friday night in the semifinals of the CCLA Conference Tournament to Dayton 9-17. The Panthers will now have to wait to see if they qualified for the National Tournament when the bracket is released late Sunday night.
Davenport got off to a good start and was the first team on the board with a
Cody Cross goal 1:35 into the game. The Flyers then scored three consecutive goals to take a two goal lead midway through the first quarter.
Lyle Parks and
Dominic Boggiano each scored a goal to end the first quarter but a Dayton goal in between kept the Panther deficit at one heading into the second quarter.
The Panthers tied the game early in the quarter on another Parks goal. On the goal,
Jordan Richtsmeier sent a behind the back pass to Parks who was in front of the net. Parks then used nice footwork to keep himself out of the crease to put away the goal.
From that point on it was all Dayton. The Flyers ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead over the Panthers at the half.
Dayton pushed their lead to seven early in the third quarter. It looked as if Davenport was going to try to make a run midway through the third getting two quick goals by
Jack Turcotte and
Lyle Parks to cut the lead to five.
The Flyers responded with a man up goal, their second of the game, to stop the Panthers momentum. Parks,
Jack Turcotte, and Cross each added another goal in the game but it wasn't enough to overcome the Flyers, who outscored the Panthers 5-3 in the last 18 minutes of the game.
Alexis Buque dropped to 5-3 on the season after allowing 17 goals on 29 shots that Dayton put on net.
Lyle Parks led the Panthers with four goals while
Jack Turcotte and
Cody Cross each added two and
Dominic Boggiano scored once.
Jordan Richtsmeier led the team in assists with three.
Davenport drops to 12-5 on the season and will now wait for the National Tournament bracket to be released late Sunday night.
Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Bob Clarkson
Thoughts on game – “We will have to play better if we expect to win at National, assuming we make it. But take nothing away from Dayton. They played a great game.”
What do you need to improve on before Nationals – “Assuming we make Nationals, we have several things that we need to work on over this coming week. Defensively tonight, we did not execute effectively allowing 17 goals which is the most allowed all season. And our slide packages need to improve. That's where we will start.”
