Men's Tennis Drops Pair of Matches vs. NCAA DII Schools

GVSU Box | Ferris Box

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport played a tightly contested match against Grand Valley State on Saturday night eventually falling 7-2 and then ran out of steam against Ferris State on Sunday falling 9-0 to the Bulldogs. The pair of losses to the GLIAC foes drops DU to 4-3 on the year as the Panthers will take part in the Grand Rapids City Tournament at Orchard Hills on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday – 7-2 loss vs. Grand Valley State

In Saturday's match against GVSU, the Panthers got ahead 2-1 after doubles play with the only loss coming at the top by the score of 8-5. DU got a pair of 9-7 wins from Zac Chambers and Tyler Chambers at No. 3 while Matheus Moreira de Carvalho and Eric Pell won at No. 2.

The Panthers were then swept in singles play to see the Lakers take the match 7-2.   Pierre Michelsen lost a tough 3-set battle, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-5 in the No. 1 spot. Christian Woods also fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 as did  Tyler Chambers at No. 4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Quote – Head coach Patrick Grashorn

“The guys got up for this one! All of the matches were close and we had a shot at all of them. I was happy to see us perform well in doubles which we've struggled with in the past. Still some area for improvement.”

Sunday – 9-0 loss vs. Ferris State

Davenport, playing a little bit short-handed due to Vitaly Shumilov being out with the flu, struggled to get going on Sunday against the Bulldogs as they fell 9-0. In singles, only one match went more than the minimum 2-sets as Carvalho lost 5-7. 6-4, 10-3 at the No. 6 spot. DU was only able to win 18 total games in the other five matches combined.

On the doubles side, the Panthers had to make a big shift in their lineup and they loss all three by a combined 24-9. The No. 1 pair of Pierre Michelsen and Christian Woods put up the biggest fight falling 8-6.

DU will now head to the GR City Tournament hosted by Aquinas College this weekend and it will be their last appearance before heading south to Florida for their annual spring break trip.

Quote – Head coach Patrick Grashorn

“Not a good day for us. Were slow from the get go. Also had Vitaly come down with a fever. Christian did a good job filling in for him in doubles but not having him in singles really affected us. Regardless of playing up a spot, the guys struggled with the morning match after playing last night. Something we will remedy for the future.”
