JOLIET, Ill. – Opening the spring season as the No. 25 team in the country, the Davenport Women's Tennis team cruised to a 7-2 win over host St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday evening. The Lady Panthers swept the singles portion after falling behind 2-1 in doubles. Davenport evens their record at 3-3 on the season as they will host Ferris State on February 16.
Davenport got their spring season off to a great start by posting an impressive 7-2 win at the University of St. Francis on Saturday. Davenport, ranked No. 25 in the NAIA preseason coaches poll, fell behind 2-1 in doubles as the Fighting Saints posted wins at No. 1 (9-8) and No. 3 (9-7). DU avoided getting swept thanks to an 8-6 win at No. 2 behind
Kristi Kuzdal and
Emily Spiech.
Turning to the singles, Davenport showed why they are ranked as high as they are as they took all six matches with only two of them going more than the minimum two sets. Davenport only dropped 10 games between matches 3-5 highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 sweep by sophomore
Angelica Woods.
Emily Spiech and
Kristi Kuzdal each stayed undefeated on the day as Spiech won in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 while Kuzdal won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Freshman
Marcie Kooyers won her No. 4 match 6-3, 6-4 and
Katie VanDerLaan finished off the singles sweep at No. 6.
DU will host Ferris State on February 16 before heading to Florida for their annual spring break trip.
