Box Score
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport took on their biggest rival today and the tightly contested match with Aquinas came down to a few three-set thrillers but DU was unable to overcome the No. 13 Saints as they fell 6-3. The loss, which came with the Panthers leading 2-1 after doubles play, drops Davenport to 12-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. DU will look to rebound when they face Cornerstone next Wednesday at 4 p.m. The matches are schedules to be played at the brand new Farmers Athletic Complex depending on the weather.
Davenport looked to take another big step as their young lineup entered one of their toughest matches of the season against Aquinas who entered the week ranked No. 13 in the NAIA Top-25 Poll. The Panthers jumped out to a great start by taking two of the three doubles matches with the tandem of
Eric Pell and
Matheus Moreira de Carvalho winning 8-3 at No. 2 and the duo of Zach Chambers and
Tyler Chambers winning by the same score at No. 3.
Looking to pull the upset and claim arguably the biggest win in the program's short four year history, DU was unable to overcome the Saints solid single play as they dropped five of the six matches to lose 6-3.
The lone Panther to get a win was
Christian Woods, who extended his own personal singles winning streak to 11 in a row with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 victory over reigning WHAC Player of the Week Frankie Fischer. DU did come close to winning two other matches in three-sets but
Pierre Michelsen and Carvalho both fell by the slimmest of margins.
Davenport will hope to open their brand new state of the art tennis facility next week when they face cross-town foe Cornerstone University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Post-Match Quotes – Head coach Patrick Grashorn
We got off to a great start in doubles at 2 and 3 and the guys didn't let them back in which is something we've been working on. Singles play was tight and we weren't able to find the right focus.
