GRAND RAPID, Mich. – Davenport's Men's Lacrosse team will be in Saline, Mich. this weekend trying to secure a spot in the National Tournament. After finishing the year 4-2 in the CCLA the Panthers earned the No.3 seed and will face off against No.2 Pittsburgh in the first semi-final while Western Michigan will face Michigan State in the other semi-final. The winner of this weekend's tournament will receive an automatic bid to the National Tournament.
Davenport will try and avenge an 11-18 loss to Pittsburgh that took place back on April 13. Last time out DU fell behind 8-1 five minutes into the second quarter and couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Cody Cross led Davenport with three goals while
Lyle Parks and
Chapin White each added two apiece. Davenports 18 goals against was the 2nd most goals against in program history.
DU will have the tough task of slowing down Tyler Novotny who ranks second in the nation with 54 goals on the year. Novotny led Pitt with five goals in the Panthers 18-11 win over Davenport during the regular season. Chris Wetzel was also a big contributor with four goals and two assists.
If Davenport gets past Pittsburgh they will face the winner of Western and Michigan State. The Panthers cruised by the Broncos 23-8 at home during the regular season but were defeated 1-11 by Michigan State in their season finale.
Both games will be held at Saline High School East Stadium. The Panthers semi-final game will be 7:00 pm on Friday and the championship game will be at 4:00 pm on Saturday. Live Stats will be available for both games.
