HOLLAND, Mich. – Playing their first match since returning from their spring break trip to Florida over two weeks ago, the No. 21 ranked men's tennis team posted an impressive 9-0 win over Hope College in Holland. The win lifts the Panthers to 9-4 on the season as they will resume play next Thursday when they travel up the East Beltline to another MIAA foe in Calvin College.
Davenport took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles competition and then ran away with all six singles matches to post an impressive sweep of the Flying Dutchmen on their home courts on Thursday evening. The win is the fourth in the last six matches overall for the Panthers.
Juan-Philip van Antwerpen partnered with
Sam Rogerson to win 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and that same score was posted by the No. 3 team of
Kevin Slagh and
Haja Denise. Also winning to put DU up 3-0 was the brother tandem of
Zac Chambers and
Tyler Chambers (8-3).
In singles, Rogerson, van Antwerpen, and both Chambers's brothers won their matches while dropping only one set between the four.
Also posting wins in singles play was
Christian Woods at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2) and
Matheus Moreira de Carvalho at No. 4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 10-8.
Davenport will meet another Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe next Thursday when they take on Calvin College.
