PONTIAC, Mich. – The Davenport men's lacrosse team came up victorious 11-9 in a close matchup with Liberty University Saturday.
Dominic Boggiano led the Panthers with three goals and
Coltin Borthwick assisted nearly half of the team's goals with five. DU will head to Colorado this week for a three-game weekend slate starting on March 27 at Colorado State. Faceoff in Fort Collins is at 9 p.m. ET.
Liberty showed it came out ready to play by striking the net within the first 3:22 into the game.
Jimmy Fata won a faceoff and drove it down for a goal to tie game one minute later, but the Flames came back to score two and take a 3-1 lead halfway through the first quarter. Borthwick and Boggiano each scored a goal to tie the game at three apiece. Liberty would score one more before the end of the first quarter.
Davenport and Liberty battled in the second for control of the game. Liberty once again grabbed a two-goal lead with an early second quarter goal, but Boggiano would capture two in a row to tie the game once again, Borthwick assisting on both. The Flames were able to score again with five minutes remaining in the second to take the lead.
Daniel Hume assisted
Chapin White on the first goal of the second half, and the score was 6-6 with plenty of time to go. Davenport began to get a better grasp of control as
Parker Horvath gave DU its first lead of the game. Hume and Tagliagamble both scored for the Panthers late in the third to create a 9-6 situation going into the fourth, while DU's defense kept Liberty scoreless in the third.
Liberty cut the Panthers lead to only two goals early in the fourth.
Nathaniel Adkins responded with a goal, but the Flames were able to score two in the following minutes and the game was once again tight with Liberty only down by one with less than two minutes remaining. Hume came in with a clutch goal with forty seconds left on the clock to cut the Flames comeback short and take home the 11-9 win.
