FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The first game of a grueling road trip to play the best teams in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) ended with a late rally but the Panthers came up short as they fell to No. 6 Colorado State 11-9. The loss is the first of the season for Davenport as they are now 4-1 with a matchup on Saturday against No. 2 Colorado.
Davenport made their way out to the Rocky Mountains to face the best of the best in the MCLA DI and they got off to a tough start with an 11-9 setback to the Rams of Colorado State. The two-time defending national champions used a 6-3 lead at halftime and increased it to as many as five in the second to take home the win to improve to 7-3 overall.
The Panthers got the opening goal of the second half to decrease the margin to just two but the Rams came back with three unanswered to up their lead to 9-4. The teams would trade goals over the next few minutes of the third but a late goal by the Panthers brought the lead down to four and then DU opened the fourth with a quick one to get within 10-7.
The comeback continued after a timeout by CSU as the Panthers put up two quick tallies from
Chapin White and
Richie Tagliagambe to get within 11-9 but the Rams held tough down the stretch to preserve the two-goal win.
