GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On senior night, the Davenport men's lacrosse team faced crosstown rival Grand Valley State.
Dominic Boggiano led the team scoring six goals and
Parker Horvath chipped in with two goals and three assists. Davenport's four game win streak was snapped as they fall to 8-4 on the season. The Panthers will now focus their attention to Siena Heights in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Aquinas College.
Dominic Boggiano led the team in scoring with six goals in the game and
Parker Horvath was the only other Panther to score more the one goal in the game.
Coltin Borthwick,
Chapin White,
Devon Benson and
Mitchell Clay each tallied a goal in the game.
Jimmy DeJaeger won 19 of 27 face offs in the game.
Grand Valley started the scoring on a man up opportunity, but Boggiano got the Panther offense going with back-to-back goals to give Davenport a 2-1 lead with 12:12 left in the first quarter. Davenport outscored Grand Valley 5-4 to close out the period and take a 7-5 into the break.
The Davenport offense struggled in the second quarter as they were held scoreless, and the Lakers score five unanswered goals to lead 10-7 at half time. Zack Grusell scored three goals and one assist in the quarter to lead the Lakers to a dominant second quarter.
Grand Valley continued their momentum in the second half as they scored the first goal of the half to continued their run and increase their lead to four goals. Horvath and White scored back-to-back goals to bring the Panthers within two, but Jesse Gilbert scored a goal to close out the scoring in the third quarter as the Lakers led 12-9 with one quarter remaining.
The Lakers started the scoring once again in the fourth quarter to take a 13-9 lead. Davenport started to make their comeback with 10:28 left in regulation as Boggiano scored a goal. Boggiano struck again for his sixth goal of the game to cut the Laker lead to two goals, and gave the Panthers the momentum with 7:51 remaining.
Mitchell Clay tallied his only goal of the game to bring Davenport within one, but DU could not muster a last minute goal as their comeback fell short and Grand Valley picked up the win 13-12.
The Panthers will now face Siena Heights in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title game at Aquinas College on Saturday at 5 p.m.
