Box ScoreGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The men's tennis team entered the NAIA Unaffiliated Group as the No. 3 overall seed and they survived an opening round scare from the No. 6 seed Cornerstone to advance to Saturday's semifinal round where they will meet Northwestern Ohio. Davenport fell behind 2-1 after doubles but recovered to win four of the five singles matches that were completed to take home the 5-3 win. The other semifinal will pit Aquinas vs. Indiana Tech which will be played at 9 a.m. along with the DU-UNOH match at Farmers Athletic Complex.
Davenport found itself in an odd position after doubles play against their cross-town foe Cornerstone but strong singles play lifted them to a 5-3 win over the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone, which had dropped two matches to DU by a combined 17-1 this season, posted two wins in doubles for a 2-1 lead as DU got their only point from the No. 1 team of
Jordan Parker and
Matheus Moreira de Carvalho (8-4).
Needing four wins in singles to advance in the tournament, DU got it started with a quick win from
Sam Rogerson at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0) and followed with a win at No. 6 from
Tyler Chambers (7-5, 6-4).
After CU took the win at No. 3 and evened the match at 3-3, Davenport got a straight sets win from
Jordan Parker (6-4,6-3)and then followed it with another one from
Zac Chambers (6-3, 6-3) to complete the victory.
