Panthers open with pair of wins

DU beat Indiana 8-6 and Elon 25-9

INDIANAPOLIS/BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team opened their season in the Hoosier State this weekend with a pair of wins. The Panthers defeated Indiana University on Friday at Park Tudor School (8-6) and then traveled to Bloomington for a 25-9 win over Elon on Saturday.

The Panthers and Hoosiers staged a back-and-forth battle in the season opener for both teams. The teams played it close to the vest and it showed in the low-scoring affair. The first quarter was the highest scoring of the game as DU led 3-2. Each team scored just once in the second quarter and it was 4-3 at halftime. Each team then scored twice in the third quarter and the Panthers outscored the Hoosier, 2-1, in the fourth quarter for the final two-goal cushion.

Indiana won a majority of the face-offs as Alex Cain went 7-of-10 and Jake LaMar went 6-of-7. The Panthers tried four different players in the face-off circle with Connor Foster winning three. Jack Huffman got the start in net and made 11 saves for DU. The Panthers were led offensively by Bryan Larocque, Jarred Riley and Josh Jubenville with two goals. Dylan Riley and Blake McDonald also scored a goal for the Panthers. David Boomsma had four ground balls while Lucas LaForge and Brian Feiler each had three ground balls.

It was all Davenport in this one as they handed Elon their third straight loss to start the season. The Panthers got out to a 8-2 lead after the first quarter and just poured it on after that. DU scored five goals in the second and third quarters while finishing with seven more goals in the fourth quarter.

McDonald led the team with four assists and also added a goal. Larocque had a stellar game with six goals and three assists. Foster managed to win four face-offs in eight attempts. Jake Hodges corraled seven ground balls and added a pair of assists. Dylan Riley scored seven goals and had one assist. Joe Lopez finished with five ground balls, one goal and one assist. In all, eight different players scored a goal for Davenport.

UP NEXT
The Panthers will make the long journey to Utah for a pair of games during spring break. Davenport will play Utah Valley (0-4) on Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in Orem to begin the trip.
