DU dominant in weekend sweep at Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The D3 Hockey program needed a win after starting the season with eight straight losses. They got not one but two victories over the weekend at Lake Superior State to boost the team's morale as the calendar moved into November.

DU posted a 6-0 win on Saturday in the Soo and John Lizyness had a monster game with four goals including one on the power play. He scored twice in the first period and added two more in the second period. The Panthers had scored just seven goals in their first eight games before Saturday's outburst. Carter Osborn opened the scoring at 2:52 from Jared Kifer. Lizyness scored at 16:05 on the man advantage from Montana Gottfriedson and Hunter Tolsdorf. Lizyness added his second goal just 1:19 later from Gottfriedson and Kevin Crawley.

Davenport scored three more goals in the second period before putting it on cruise control in the third period. Elijah Klco scored at 1:14 from Osborn and Tolsdorf. Lizyness scored his hat trick goal at 11:10 from Crawley and added his fourth at 13:50 from Tolsdorf and Gottfriedson. Both those guys finished with three assists. Thomas Near stopped all 24 shots against him in the shutout.

Davenport followed up Saturday's win with a 9-2 triumph on Sunday afternoon. DU scored four times in the first period, three times in the second and two more times in the third. Gottfriedson scored three times and assisted on another. He scored the team's first goal at 0:34 from Crawley and also had a power play goal at 13:53 of the second period and his third goal came at 1:50 of the third from Cam Hofstetter and Crawley.

Hofstetter also scored twice as well as Tolsdorf, Lizyness, Crawley and Kifer with one goal. Aiden Dion notched three assists on the day. Shaid Shearer was able to stop 23-of-25 shots on the afternoon in net.
