LANSING, Mich. - The top-seeded Davenport baseball team (26-14) will begin the quest for their first GLIAC Tournament title on Thursday, May 20 with a scheduled first pitch at 2 PM against sixth-seeded Saginaw Valley State (17-15). The double-elimination tournament has a new home in 2021 at Jackson Field in Lansing, Mich. home of the Lugnuts, a High-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.
Davenport is riding one of the hottest win streaks in the country at 10 games coming into the tournament. The Panthers were sitting in sixth place in the GLIAC standings over two weeks ago and made a magical run to their first-ever regular season crown. During their 10-game win streak, they have outscored their opponents 106-30 and this is the longest win streak since the 2017 season when the Panthers won 16 in a row from April 14 to May 8.
The Panthers and Cardinals have played four times already this season with DU taking three of the four games in University Center. On April 2, the Panthers won both games of a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 13-6. After dropping a 10-8 decision in game one on April 3, Davenport scored a season-high 27 runs in the 27-15 victory. It was the third-highest run total in a game in school history.
Christian Petre batted .500 (8-for-16) in the four games with eight runs and six RBI.
Noah Marcoux batted .500 (7-for-14) with seven runs, two doubles, two home runs and four RBI.
Nolan Anspaugh batted .474 (9-for-19) with six runs and 11 RBI. The Panthers as a team batted .371 (53-for-143) and hit 13 doubles, two triples and nine home runs. The Cardinals committed 10 errors compared to just three for DU.
