GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The progress of the ACHA Division III hockey team was on display Saturday afternoon as they battled to a 3-3 tie with Michigan State at Patterson Ice Center. Earlier this season back on Oct. 8, MSU beat the Panthers 6-1.
Davenport was clinging to a one-goal lead late in the contest when the Spartans' Alec Evans scored with 51 seconds remaining to force overtime. The Spartans scored the only goal of the first period at 18:34 as Jack Weallans scored from Mike Marsallo and Evans.
Davenport came back with the only two goals of the second period. Spencer Anderson a newcomer to the squad scored the first of his two goals at 4:06 from Luke Heneveld.
Elijah Klco added the team's second goal just 2:03 later from
Carter Osborn.
MSU tied the game at 1:21 of the third period as Evans scored his first goal of the period from Andre Dziurzynski. Anderson's second goal for DU came on the power play at 6:51 from
Hunter Tolsdorf and
John Lizyness. DU had a tremendous penalty kill stifling all seven attempts by the Spartans. MSU held a 44-27 advantage in shots on goal.
Thomas Near got the start in net and stopped 41 shots in a great performance.
