Panthers drop GLIAC opener at Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team ran into a three-headed monster at Lake Superior State in the GLIAC opener on Thursday in a 75-59 loss to the Lakers. DU had their three-game win streak halted by a trio of Lakers including Mattison Rayman, Grace Bradford, and Margot Woughter. Those three combined for 61 of the team's 75 points and 25 of the team's 36 rebounds. Rayman and Bradford each had a double-double on the night with Rayman going for 20 points and 12 boards while Bradford had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Woughter scored a game-high 21 points for the Lakers who ended up going to the free throw line way more than the Panthers. LSSU converted 28-of-30 compared to 11-of-17 for Davenport. DU was whistled for 21 fouls compared to 11 for the home team.

LSSU grabbed an early lead and did not let it go until 4:04 left in the second quarter at 27-26. After that point, the Lakers extended their lead back to 35-29 in a two-minute span and led by six points at halftime.

Davenport regained the lead at 44-43 with 4:46 left in the third quarter and the teams were tied at 50 with 52 seconds left in the quarter. From that point it was the Lakers that closed out the final quarter strong going on a 21-9 advantage in the final 10 minutes to pull away for just their second win of the season.

Lillee Gustafson led the Panthers with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She went 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-8 at the line in 33 minutes. Gustafson and Scout Nelson both fouled out of the game. Nelson played just 23 minutes and finished with five points after scoring a career-high 24 last time out against Hillsdale. She also had four assists and two blocked shots. Makenna Bryant scored eight points and made two triples to go with four rebounds and four assists. Nevaeh Williams also scored eight points and had two steals in 14-plus minutes.
