Reitzel, Mack score first collegiate goal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's Division III hockey team tallied their first victory in a double-header matchup against the University of Michigan-Flint, splitting the series 1-1 overall.

Head Coach Phil Wendecker applauded the effort from his group across the board, noting that goaltender Barrett Rosser came up big for the Panthers inside the net in the 2-1 victory of the first match after allowing just one goal in a total of 47 shots-on-target by the Wolverines (22 by DU).

Following a scoreless first period, the Wolverines scored on a double-assisted goal. With less than two minutes remaining in the second, first-year Panther Alex Reitzel tied the match, 1-1, off an unassisted goal for his first career goal. Under 90 seconds remaining in the match, a pass from Matthew Sweetland found the stick of freshman Justin Mack, marking a career moment as he sent the game-winning goal into the back of the net and gave the Panthers their first tally in the win column.

Now 1-4, DU faces PennWest California on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 9:30 p.m. at the Patterson Ice Center.
