Women's Basketball Weekly Preview: DU embarks on final road games of the season

DU will play at Wayne State on Thursday and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's basketball team will set out on their final road games of the season this week as they travel to Wayne State on Thursday followed by a trip to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. 

Davenport will be trying to duplicate the previous result back on Jan. 14 when they picked up a 75-65 win over the Warriors in Grand Rapids. The game ventured into overtime where the Panthers outscored the Warriors 14-4. It was the only game this season that DU had five players score in double figures. Mary Liedel led DU with 17 points and also had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Lillee Gustafson also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Scout Nelson chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Jaci Walker poured in 12 points in 16 minutes. Makenna Bryant scored 11 points and hit a pair of three's. Rebecca Fugate played all 45 minutes for WSU and led their team with 15 points.

The first meeting earlier this season saw the Cardinals hold the Panthers to 46 points and 32 percent shooting in a 16-point win in Grand Rapids on Jan. 12. The Cardinals came out strong with a 53.9 shooting percentage in the first quarter compared to 25 percent by Davenport. The third quarter was the highest-scoring one with 40 combined points (23-17 in favor of SVSU). Scout Nelson led the Panthers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Makenna Bryant also was in double figures with 11 points and went 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Tori DePerry led SVSU with 18 points going 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Kaitlyn Zarycki scored 13 points and led her team with eight assists. The Cardinals have won eight in a row against the Panthers dating back to Jan. 12, 2019 and have yet to win on the road as a member of the GLIAC in University Center.

Northern Michigan 73, Davenport 55 (Feb. 9)

Lillee Gustafson led the way for the Panthers (7-16, 1-12 GLIAC), scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The performance marks her 11th double-double on the season and 4th 20-point double-double.

Mary Liedel finished with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals while knocking down three shots from behind the arc for DU. Ellie Toney added nine points, five rebounds, and four assists in the loss.

The Panthers were able to jump out to an early 10-0 lead over the Wildcats (13-10, 8-6 GLIAC) with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter. NMU pulled within three to set the score at 12-9 before DU scored the final four points of the quarter to give themseleves a seven-point cushion heading into the second quarter.

Northern Michigan took its first lead of the game with 1:30 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats went into the half with a slim 32-29.

Coming out of the break, Alexa Kolnitys buried a three from the left corner off an assist from Scout Nelson to tie the game at 32 apiece. The Wildcats responded with a layup on the ensuing possession and were able to control the remainder of the game.

● #24 Michigan Tech 63, Davenport 48 (Feb. 11)

The Davenport University women's basketball team closed out its five- game home stretch Saturday afternoon in the DU Student Center, as they were defeated by No. 24 Michigan Tech 63-48.

Ellie Toney put in a team-high 15 points, all of which came from behind the arc, shooting 5-for-8 from range for the Panthers (7-17, 1-13 GLIAC). Lillee Gustafson finished in double-digits for the 13th time in her last 15 games played, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds for DU.

Scout Nelson took the court for the 100th time in her career as a Panther in the loss. The senior guard finished the contest tying a career-high in steals with four while adding eight rebounds, five points, and two assists. Nelson averages 8.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in her career with DU.

Coming out of the break trailing 29-21, Nelson found an open Toney on the right wing for a three to bring the Davenport deficit to five. Midway through the third quarter Mary Liedel hit a pair of shots on consecutive possessions to pull within four.

With the game hanging in the balance, Toney knocked down her fifth three of the contest with 8:34 remaining to set the score at 43-36 in favor of the Huskies (20-5, 12-3 GLIAC). However, Ellie Mackay scored 14 points over the final 6:14 of play to close out the game for MTU.
