FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - For the second straight game, the sixth inning proved pivotal in a loss at Nova Southeastern for the Davenport baseball team. This game was a closer one than yesterday, but the Sharks scored three runs in the sixth to pull ahead 6-4 and that was the final outcome in the final game of a three-game weekend series.
Nova Southeastern jumped ahead 2-0 after three innings with single runs in the second and third innings.
Isaac Van Dyke got the start for Davenport and gave up a RBI single to Derek Bermudez in the second and a RBI single to Duncan Pastore in the third. He had a steady outing which lasted five innings and he had a no-decision despite giving up three earned runs.
The Panthers scored the next four runs as
Caleb Anspaugh had a two-RBI double in the fourth and
Carter Troncin had a two-RBI single in the fifth. The Sharks got within a run in the fifth as Adam Frank had a RBI groundout to score Bermudez.
Spencer Vainavicz entered with a man on first in the sixth after Van Dyke walked the leadoff hitter. Vainavicz however walked the next hitter on five pitches. The big blow was an error by
Khale Showers which allowed two runs to score and a runner to reach third. Bermudez followed with a sacrifice fly to center which scored Adam Smith.
DU would not threaten in the final three innings leaving just one runner on base. Vainavicz took the tough-luck loss falling to 1-2 on the season.
Logan Bursick-Harrington threw one relief inning in the eighth and retired the side in order with one strikeout. Matt Kavanaugh (1-0) in relief got the win for Nova Southeastern.
Davenport finished with nine hits on the day as Troncin and
Josh Robinson each had two hits. Robinson reached base four times with those two hits and also two walks.
Tyler Mosher had a double going 1-for-2. Anspaugh stole three bases in the contest to set a new career high.
The Panthers are back in Michigan next weekend as they travel to Detroit for a doubleheader against Wayne State on Friday (Mar. 24) to start conference play. The first pitch at Harwell Field is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
