Softball Weekly Preview: Panthers Continue GLIAC Play at Ferris State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After opening GLIAC play 2-2 in last week's homestand, the Davenport University softball team will hit the road for a doubleheader against conference foe Ferris State Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Panthers opened GLIAC action last week with a pair of victories over Parkside on March 26 at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Mich. 

Player Notes: 
Kelsey Byers
  • The graduate transfer had her best game as a Panther, pitching seven innings, tossing a season high 12 strikeouts, and leading DU to a 6-2 win over Parkside (March 26).
  • Leads Davenport in the circle with three wins and 46 strikeouts on the season.

Hayley Kreiger
  • The decorated volleyball player continues to be one of the most consistent offensive threats for the Panthers on the diamond, currently holding the third highest batting average on the squad (.324).
  • Knocked her second home run of the season out of the park against Parkside (March 26).
  • Through four games last week, the first baseman batted.500 with a home run, a triple, and a double in four games played. 

Riley Hasseld
  • Helped lead the Panthers to a pair of victories over Parkside in its GLIAC opening doubleheader. Batted .500 (4-for-8), with three runs, and four RBis through the two games.

About the Bulldogs:
Ferris State is currently tied at No. 3 in the GLIAC standings with Purdue Northwest and Davenport, sitting at .500 with a 2-2 record in conference play. The Bulldogs swept Wayne State (4-3, 4-1), while dropping a pair of games to Saginaw Valley State (5-2, 4-2) to start GLIAC play. 

FSU lost its top performer from a season ago, Paige Kortz, who was a First Team All-GLIAC selection. The Bulldogs return a pair of Honorable Mention All-GLIAC performers from the 2021-22 season, Evelyn Blood and Kylie Winkels. Winkels is now the Bulldogs top offensive threat in her senior campaign, leading the squad in hits (30), runs (19), doubles (8), home runs (3), and RBIs (18).

Aryn Gallacher is the ace in the circle for the Bulldogs, notching a team-high six wins on the season. The junior has tossed 33 strikeouts through 77.2 innings pitched, while posting a 3.24 ERA.
