MLAX Preview: Two-game home slate in store for Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Following a nearly two-week break in the rearview, the Davenport University men's lacrosse team is gearing up for a pair of matchups at home.

Last time out, the Panthers scraped by with an 11-10 victory over Wheeling University in a game that went down to the wire. DU led by four goals (10-6) with 9:49 remaining, but three unanswered goals in just over two minutes had the Cardinals knocking at the door. Sean Ryan (assist Chase Post) scored the eventual game-winning goal for DU to improve their undefeated record to 3-0.

For the first time since merging with NCAA Division II ahead of the 2020 season, DU has started the season 3-0 with the intent to maintain their winning streak this week.

Malone Matchup
DU has four first-time opponents on their 2024 schedule, including Malone. The Pioneers (2-2) are looking to shake off a two-game losing streak following a loss to William Jewell (15-14) and Quincy (20-12) in their recent games.

Named First Team All-GMAC in 2023, Talon Heath leads his squad and the GMAC with 15 goals this year, averaging 3.75 per game to place Malone at No. 1 overall for goal total (65) in the conference. Zac Smargiasso is another strong returner for the Pioneers as the 2023 Great Midwest Freshman of the Year and Third Team All-GMAC honoree. Smargiasso is third on the team leaderboard for goals (10) and tied second for assists (six) with Eli Ciotti (12 goals).

Both players will strive to push their team ahead of the No. 6 selection in the GMAC Preseason Poll.

Lake Erie Matchup
The Storm are 2-0 against the Panthers in the all-time series, with both games decided by a single goal (12-11 and 15-14). In the most recent matchup in 2023, DU led by three goals at halftime but was outscored 3-1 in the third period and 5-3 in the fourth.

Selected to finish third in the GMAC this year, Lake Erie is in search of its first win this season after coming short against Lewis (14-5) on Feb. 17 and No. 8 UIndy (13-3) on Feb. 24. Jackman Schooley leads the Storm with two goals (one assist), as Dawson Kindall has recorded a team-high two assists (one goal) thus far.

With a two-game slate both at home and on the road this week, the Storm will look to capitalize on home-field advantage while extending an undefeated all-time series.
