Panthers split middle two games against Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - The Davenport baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday at Quincy. DU won game one 6-3 and then fell 5-4 in the nightcap. Jerad Berkenpas got the win in game one to improve to 2-1 this season. He threw six strong innings and allowed two runs with one walk and six strikeouts. Tyler Kapa pitched in the seventh inning and got his first save at Davenport. He allowed two hits in one inning of work and struck out three. Kade Ruffner (0-3) took the loss for Quincy and lasted just two innings while giving up six runs.

Anthony Aloisio had a two-run homer in the first inning as part of a three-run start for the Panthers. Coltrane Rubner had a RBI single in the second inning. Sam Clay had a two-run scoring single in the third inning as DU built a 6-0 lead. Quincy would score the last three runs on a fielder's choice in the fourth, sacrifice fly in the sixth, and RBI single by David Broughton in the seventh. Broughton finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Rubner, Aloisio, and Clay each had two hits as the Panthers totaled eight in game one.

The second game would go into extra innings and Davenport would score in the top of the eighth for a 4-3 lead. Clay had a two-out RBI single to center as pinch runner Dominick Cowdrey scored from second base. Quincy would score twice in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win. JD Ortiz had a RBI single and the hardest way to lose happened as Kapa balked home the winning run as pinch runner Jake Vitale scored from third base.

Davenport took a 3-0 lead in game two as Aloisio had a RBI in the third inning and two runs scored in the fourth inning on bases-loaded walks to Michael Tchavdarov and Josh Robinson. Ortiz doubled home a run in the fourth for the Hawks. Harry Fandre also had a RBI double in the inning and Joe Huffman had a RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. Quincy had 12 hits in game two and five different players had two hits. The top four of the batting order went 7-for-12. Clay had a pair of hits from the nine-spot in the batting order and also stole a base. Rubner went 2-for-4 with a run, walk, and stolen base. Austin VandenBrink (0-1) took the loss as the third pitcher for DU. He allowed two runs and four hits in one inning before Kapa finished the game. Jared Schwartz got the start and tossed four innings with three runs allowed and three strikeouts. Jack Snow tossed two scoreless relief innings and struck out three.

The teams will finish up their weekend series tomorrow (March 3) for a 1 PM first pitch eastern time.
