GLIAC play starts with a pair of 4-1 wins at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. - The start of conference play for the Davenport baseball team could not have been any better with a pair of 4-1 wins on the road at Purdue Northwest. The Panthers have started to show signs of turning it around with three straight wins, which is their longest of the season.

The Pride scored in the first inning of both games and then were held scoreless for the final six innings. Carson Fischer in game one and Jerad Berkenpas in game two threw complete games of seven innings each. Fischer allowed just one hit and no earned runs and set a new career high with 13 strikeouts. He did not walk a batter and needed 96 pitches to go the distance. Berkenpas pitched more to contact with three strikeouts and allowed four hits and no earned runs himself in 85 pitches.

Jared Evans and Connor Hnilo each had a RBI double. Luke Montgomery scored on a passed ball in game one and then Hnilo had his RBI double in the third inning followed by Evans to give DU a 2-1 lead. The team scored two more insurance runs in the sixth inning. Josh Robinson had a RBI single to score pinch runner Dominick Cowdrey and then Robinson would score on a wild pitch.

Hayden Matulich had a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game two for the Pride before Davenport scored the final four runs. Chase Kemp, who finished 2-for-2 with a walk, drove in a run in the second on an infield single. Michael Tchavdarov, the reigning GLIAC Player of the Week, had a RBI single in the third inning and Carson Price drove in a run while reaching on an error. Anthony Aloisio had a RBI single in the fifth inning to end the scoring.

The Panthers are scheduled to play a doubleheader in Hammond, Ind. tomorrow against No. 18 Wayne State in another conference twinbill slated for 2:00 PM Eastern Time.
