MLAX Preview: DU resumes GLVC play in pair of road games

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action resumes this week for Davenport University men's lacrosse, with the Panthers facing two top-25 opponents on the road.

DU secured an 8-6 victory last week over Quincy University for the Panthers' first conference win this season.

The tight battle maintained DU's undefeated record against the opponent (4-0), with Braylon Baker recording five goals to match his career high. Baker moved up the national leaderboards for points per game (5.27) to sixth overall in NCAA Division II with an average of 2.55 goals (t-third GLVC) and 2.73 assists (No. 1 GLVC). Jayden Ashley added two goals to bring his season total to 27 (t-fourth GLVC), his 3.09 points per game average being the eight-highest in the conference.

Defensively, Daniel Milano tallied his second-best save percentage of the season (.684) against Quincy to place himself at No. 16 in the country with a .558 season percentage. The average is also tied for the second-highest in the GLVC (min. 10 games played), with his 10.91 saves per game placing him at No. 4 in the conference. Kaden Seelye still leads the conference in caused turnovers per contest (2.91), tied for the seventh-best average in NCAA DII, for a season total of 32.

The Panthers gear up to face the top two teams in the conference for their final road games of the regular season.

Lewis Matchup
Lewis was selected to finish tied for first with Maryville in the GLVC Preseason Poll, currently 8-3 overall this season. The Flyers are one of two GLVC teams with an undefeated record in league play (2-0), as their most recent game was against then-No. 15 Maryville, which resulted in a 20-12 win for Lewis.

Second Team All-GLVC honoree Even Clement leads the team in goals (27) and assists (18) for the second-best points-per-game average (4.09) in the conference. Baden Boyenko (16 assists), Malikye Good, and Paul Ruskoski are tied for second in the team leaderboards with 16 goals each. Drew Andre is another facilitator on offense, with a team-high 18 assists.

2023 Goalkeeper of the Year Riah Rathe has started and played in all 11 contests for the Flyers with an 8.19 goals-against average and a .638 save percentage (134 saves), his 12.18 saves per contest being the 25th-best in NCAA DII.

Ranked No. 21 in this week's USILA Coaches Poll, Lewis leads the all-time series 5-0 against the Panthers.

Rockhurst Matchup
Selected to finish tied for third with Indianapolis as the reigning GLVC Tournament Champions, Rockhurst is ranked No. 20 in the country as they lead the conference with a perfect 3-0 record. The Hawks' most recent game ended in a 9-8 overtime victory against then-No. 7 UIndy on March 30.

Defensively, Matt Campion and Matthew Kallberg lead the team with 15 caused turnovers each. Carson Bradshaw (64), Oran Lautenbach (49), and Campion (36) have a knack for finding the ball as the team leaders in groundballs. Brock Ollila has started and played in all 11 games with averages of 14.20 goals against and a .400 save percentage.

Freshman Linus Toward is No. 9 in the country and No. 1 in the GLVC for goals per game (3.45), with his 3.73 points per contest average being the third-best in the conference. Jonah Mcconnell is another offensive catalyst with 27 goals and 11 assists this season.

Rockhurst leads the historical matchup against DU 3-1 as the Panthers pieced together a 12-10 victory over the Hawks last year in Grand Rapids.
