Panthers drop a doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State

UNIV. CENTER, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team concluded their season series against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday afternoon with a pair of defeats by scores of 4-2 and 14-4.

The first game was scoreless through three innings before the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Reed Raymond had a two-RBI single to right field which would just be the start to a special day at the plate for him. The Panthers would tie it up in the top of the fifth as Michael Tchavdarov launched a two-run home run to right field.

The Cardinals took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth as Colin Cornwell had a RBI single to right field and Austin Schweiger followed with a RBI single to left field. Tyler McKinstry got the start for Davenport and took the loss (0-3). He lasted 4.1 innings and allowed four earned runs with three walks and one strikeout. Cade Kontny finished the game in relief going 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs. Chase Raymond improved to 6-1 on the hill for SVSU. He struck out four and walked one in six innings. Brandon Scheurer earned his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning.

Davenport scored three runs in the top of the first inning in game two but then gave up 13 straight runs before scoring one more time in the seventh. Josh Robinson blasted a three-run home run in that first inning to stake the Panthers to an early lead. Reed Raymond then went to town with a RBI single in the first, RBI double in the fourth, three-RBI triple in the sixth and another RBI single in the seventh. Raymond finished 4-for-6 with six RBI.

Hayden Jatczak finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Austin Cicerone had a double and drove in four runs. Cornwell drew three walks and scored three times. Robinson was the lone Panther with multiple hits in game two going 2-for-4. Jatczak got the start for SVSU but exited after the first inning. Jackson Decker (3-0) went the next five innings to get the win and fanned five.

The Panthers will travel to Hillsdale on Tuesday, Apr. 16 for a 6:00 PM non-conference game.
