Panthers prevail over Hawks in 8-6 win at home

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a matchup that went down to the wire, the Davenport University men's lacrosse team scraped by with an 8-6 win over Quincy University.

The victory marked the first in conference play for the Panthers (1-2), while DU managed to defend their all-time undefeated record against the Hawks, now improving to 4-0 overall.

Neither side could capitalize on their shot attempts in the early portions of the first period until the Panthers received a man-up opportunity at the 8:30 marker. They took advantage of the opportunity as Braylon Baker scored his first of five goals off an assist by Keelan McKouen. The Hawks responded just over a minute later to level the scoreboard. However, Baker (assist Trevor McDonald) scored again to regain the lead heading into the second.

Allowing Quincy to score two goals, one of which came just 23 seconds into the period, Dylan Day managed a much-needed goal for DU with 14 seconds remaining in the half to tally the score at 3-3 going into halftime.

Baker continued his offensive attack with a goal just over 70 seconds into the third period, as a back-and-forth scoring affair unfolded in the last four-and-a-half minutes in the third. The Panthers ultimately won the battle as Jayden Ashley (assist Luke Eichbauer) scored with four seconds remaining and gave DU a 6-5 lead with one period remaining.

The Panthers took care of business in the fourth, creating a 2-1 scoring run led by Ashley and Baker as they nearly held the Hawks scoreless until a goal with 1:19 left capped off the final score.

Baker's five goals were a game-high to match his career-high, as Ashley and Day were the only other goal-scorers for the Panthers. Kaden Seelye tallied a team-high four groundballs with three caused turnovers, with Brody Baker raking in two groundballs and three caused turnovers. Daniel Milano recorded a .684 save percentage (second-best this season) with 13 total saves.

DU forced 11 turnovers, grabbed 26 groundballs, and were 28-of-29 in clearances as a team.

Improving to 9-2 overall, the Panthers' conference schedule resumes next week on Wednesday, Apr. 10, at Lewis University.
