Panthers start 5-0 with game one win over UMSL and then fall in game two

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Davenport baseball won for the fifth time in as many games to start the season on Monday with a 10-4 win in game one over Missouri-St. Louis on the campus of SIU-Edwardsville. The Panthers then fell 2-1 in game two against the Tritons. DU is now 5-1 overall, while UMSL is 6-5 overall.

The Panthers scored in each of the final six innings and 7-of-9 innings in game one's 10-4 victory. Michael Tchavdarov led the way at the plate with two doubles and a triple going 3-for-4. He scored twice and drove in two runs as Davenport totaled 14 hits against three Triton pitchers. Zach Hopman, Justin Johnson, Vincent Hardy, and Chase Kemp each had two hits apiece. Hardy had a double and drove in two runs. Dylan Pawenski also homered for the second time this season which was a two-run shot to left field in the seventh inning. The Panthers stole six bases with Cody Hultink swiping two bags. Keegan Batka improved to 2-0 in his second start by going six innings and striking out seven. He allowed just five hits and one walk and handed the ball to Mason Hill. Hill finished the final three innings and allowed two hits and no earned runs to get his second save of the season.

Davenport scored first in game two as Hardy hit a solo homer to left center in the fourth inning. It was just one of two hits for the Panthers in the game. Hopman had the other hit for DU and drew a walk in three at-bats. Barrett Rose had the big hit for UMSL in the fifth inning. He doubled home Cooper Blythe and Brady Robertson for the deciding RBI's. The Tritons had just four hits in the seven-inning contest. James Geshel took the hard-luck loss and it now 1-1. He tossed six innings and allowed both runs with three walks and five strikeouts. Bryce Nicolay got the start for UMSL and lasted 3.2 innings. He allowed one run with three walks and five strikeouts. The win went to Jacob Arndt who is now 2-0 this season. Arndt threw the final three innings and allowed no hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida beginning at 6:00 PM for a single, nine-inning game.
