Panthers dominant in doubleheader sweep over Parkside

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team improved to 10-1 in the GLIAC on Saturday in a doubleheader sweep over Parkside at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers have taken the first three games in the weekend series against the Rangers, who are now 8-7 in the GLIAC. Davenport also improved to 25-3 in the all-time series against Parkside.
 
The Panthers took game one 11-1 in seven innings and then blanked the Rangers 8-0 in game two. It was the fourth shutout win of the season for Davenport, who is now 24-10 overall. Adam Berghorst improved to 5-2 on the hill this season in game one. He threw six innings and allowed three hits and one earned run. Berghorst walked four and struck out six to set a new season high in that category. Ian Dixon tossed in the seventh inning for DU and faced four batters with one strikeout. Sam Mommer took the loss for the Rangers and is now 5-2 on the season. He yielded seven earned runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings and struck out four.
 
Michael Tchavdarov was a key in the offense in game one going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three runs scored. Coltrane Rubner had a double and scored a run in four at-bats. Justin Johnson drove in two runs on a single in the first inning. Xander Reisbig had a RBI single in the first inning and then smacked a two-run homer to right center in the third inning. Logan Todd had a two-run scoring single in the fifth inning.
 
Austin VanderMarkt had one of the best outings of his career in game two. He improved to 4-0 on the mound this season by tossing a season-high eight innings and allowing just two hits and no runs on just 91 pitches. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Aidan Arbaugh finished the game in the ninth inning and faced four batters with a walk and strikeout. Keegan Waters took the loss falling to 0-3 on the mound for Parkside. He lasted four innings and gave up seven earned runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
 
Cody Hultink went 2-for-2 with a two-run scoring single in the third inning. Chase Kemp had a RBI single in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Rubner hit his first home run of the season to the opposite field for a solo shot in the third inning. Dylan Pawenski also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and was 1-for-3 with a double. Reisbig finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of doubles.
 
The teams will conclude their weekend series on Sunday with a noon first pitch scheduled at The Farm.
