GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Davenport men's tennis earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Hillsdale on Saturday at MVP SportsPlex, improving to 5-4 on the season with the narrow win.
The Chargers secured the doubles point to open the match, taking two of the three flights. At No. 1 doubles, Simone Pacciolla and Adrian Constantin battled to a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak victory, setting the tone in a tightly contested matchup. Ryan Papazov and Sam Plys followed with a strong 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while Patrick Cretu and Jackson Clements delivered the most dominant performance of the morning with a 6-0 sweep at No. 3.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, Davenport needed four individual wins to clinch the match — and got them in key spots.
Pacciolla got the ball rolling with a straight-set 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles against Plys, showcasing composure in a tight opening set before pulling away. Constantin added another critical point at No. 4 singles, grinding out a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Cretu to put Davenport within striking distance of the team win.
With the match hanging in the balance, the Panthers found their turning point at No. 1 singles. Jan Stolin needed three sets to outlast Papazov by scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Jaden Bender at No. 6 singles also clinched a pivotal point over Alex Lopez by scores of 6-2, 7-5.
The win moves Davenport above .500 (2-1) in close matches this season separated by one point and provides momentum as the Panthers continue their spring slate on Mar. 1 in Orlando, Florida. Hillsdale falls to 3-3 on the year.
