GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's tennis team got back on the courts for the beginning of their traditional season with a match on Friday against NAIA Lawrence Tech and NCAA Division II Northwood on Saturday.
The Friday match took place at Grand Rapids Racquet Club against the Blue Devils and it was all DU in a 7-0 victory. The Panthers had the clean sweep in singles without dropping a set. They also claimed all three doubles matches.Â
Reuben Bakker and
Simone Pacciolla teamed up at one doubles and claimed a 6-3 win.
Adrian Constantin and
Jan Stolin formed the duo at two doubles and had the biggest margin of victory at 6-1.
Jaden Bender and
Daniel Calver had a fight on their hands at three doubles, but pulled it out 7-5.
Stolin at one singles had little trouble with Carlos Patricio winning 6-2, 6-0. Calvin was slotted at two singles and won 6-3, 6-4 over Augustin Patte. Bakker took the third spot and won 6-4, 7-5 against Alessandro Gatto. Constantin at four singles faced off with Takuya King and prevailed 6-3, 6-4.
Rudiger Dusselberg was fresh at five singles and won 6-4, 6-4 versus Cael Guthrie.
Bennet Dozeman at six singles disposed of Tyler Brunsell by scores of 6-3, 6-4.
The Timberwolves of Northwood University proved to be too much on Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Panthers at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. NU is now leading 8-6 in the all-time series. Davenport had won the previous six straight meetings.
The Timberwolves took all three in the doubles portion. Bakker and Pacciolla fell 6-4 at one doubles. Stolin and Constantin fell 6-3 at two doubles. Calver and Bender fell 6-4 at three doubles.
The Panthers got their two points at two singles and five singles. Calver at two singles beat Marc Ferrando in three sets with scores of 1-6, 7-6, 10-4. Bender at five singles would also win in three sets and outlasted Juan Perez Garcia by scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
