GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport University men's tennis team opened GLIAC play on Friday with a 5-2 loss to Purdue Northwest at the Grand Rapids Racquet Club. The Panthers moved to 7-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play following the result.
Davenport battled closely in doubles action to begin the match. The pairing of
Adrian Constantin and
Rudiger Dusselberg defeated Purdue Northwest's top duo in a tiebreaker 7-6 (11-9). The tandem is now 3-3 in doubles together this season. The Panthers secured the doubles point with a win at No. 3 position, where
Daniel Calver and
Jaden Bender topped Daniel Sroka and Raphael Valente by the score of 6-3. That duo is now 7-5 this season in doubles.
In singles play, Davenport earned a victory at the top of the lineup. Jan Stolin delivered a strong performance at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sam Dickson. Constantin fell in three sets at No. 2 by scores of 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 against Daniel Chicano. Bender at No. 4 singles pushed Valente to three sets, but fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Reuben Bakker at No. 6 fell 6-1 in the first set, but won 6-4 in the second set to force a super tiebreaker. Sroka won that 10-7 for the point to the Pride.
The men's tennis team will go on the road on Sunday, Mar. 15 as they face Findlay in a regional matchup.
