CALEDONIA, Mich. — Davenport baseball secured a commanding 10-1 victory over Roosevelt on Friday at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in their home and GLIAC opener. A series of big innings in the second, fourth, and fifth helped Davenport accumulate a total of 10 runs, with the team collecting 12 hits, including four doubles and a triple. Roosevelt struggled defensively with three errors and managed only five hits against Davenport's effective pitching. The Panthers were also a menace of the basepaths with a total of five stolen bases in six tries.
The scoring began in the second inning when
Aiden Warn doubled and later scored on
Cam Johnson's groundout.
Aidan Arbaugh followed with a double, and
Joey Barboza's single brought him home.
Sam Clay capped the inning with an RBI triple, bringing in Barboza. Davenport led 3-0 after two innings.
In the fourth inning,
Travis Liford and Arbaugh executed a double steal, and Johnson's groundout brought Liford home. Barboza scored on a sacrifice fly by Clay, and a fielding error allowed an additional run, pushing the lead to 6-0 through four innings.
The fifth inning saw Liford double down the left-field line, driving in two runs, and collected his third hit of the game, surpassing his season average of 1.14 hits per game. This was followed by Johnson's RBI single, which was part of his standout performance where he notched three runs batted in, significantly above his season average of 0.32, extending the lead to 9-0.
Roosevelt managed to score in the sixth inning on a double play ball that plated Ian Bagaconza, but Davenport responded in the eighth when Clay reached on a throwing error, allowing Johnson to score the unearned run, making it 10-1.
Sean Knorr delivered an effective performance for Davenport, pitching six innings while allowing only one earned run on four hits. Knorr struck out four batters and walked just one, keeping the Lakers' offense largely in check. His control was evident with 51 strikes out of 82 pitches, achieving his first pitching win of the season and improving his record to 1-1.
Jaden Alberson provided three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and issuing two walks without surrendering any runs, maintaining a steady presence on the mound with a 1.00 WHIP.
Clay drove in two runs and recorded a triple, contributing significantly to Davenport's offensive efforts. Warn crossed the plate twice and delivered a double, enhancing the team's scoring opportunities. Liford amassed three hits, including two doubles, while also driving in two runs and stealing two bases.
The next challenge for Davenport is set for Saturday, March 21, as it hosts Roosevelt at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader.
