Davenport Comes Up Short at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. — Davenport fell to Purdue Northwest 1-0 on Sunday. The Panthers finished with seven shots, including one on goal, while the Lions recorded 19 shots with six on frame.

PNW took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Aloe Berassa scored off an assist from Nikola Ivetic. Davenport had its best stretch of the first half from 26:15 to 32:30, with shots from Ethan Engle, Jordy Rodriguez and Charlie Davis, along with a corner kick. Rodriguez put his shot on target, but PNW goalkeeper Xavier Fernandez made the save. Carter McGowan made four saves in the first half as Davenport went into halftime trailing 1-0.

Davenport kept the Lions off the scoreboard in the second half. PNW put four shots on goal and earned a corner kick during a stretch from 66:15 to 70:38, but McGowan and the Davenport defense kept the deficit at one. The Panthers created some chances of their own from 72:56 to 81:57, taking three shots and earning a corner kick, but could not find the equalizer. Dugan Black received a red card at 77:22 as Davenport finished the match with 10 players.

McGowan finished with five saves in all 90 minutes. Davis led Davenport with three shots, while Drew Matyunas added two. Rodriguez had Davenport's lone shot on goal.

Davenport returns home Friday, Oct. 2, hosting St. Cloud State at 2 p.m. in Caledonia, Michigan.
