GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the third straight season, Davenport's cross country teams begin their season down the Beltline at Calvin College for the Knight Invitational. The Panther women will start the day off with the 5K run at 10 a.m. with the men's 8K race 45 minutes later.
The short drive to the Knights campus is one of four scheduled stops eight-year coach
Scott Cook booked for his two squads. Davenport will make a trip to Lansing Community College for its Invitational Oct. 3 before making a long drive to Davenport, Iowa for the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational Oct. 11. As always, the Panthers will make two visits to Riverside Park near downtown Grand Rapids for two meets, Aquinas' NAIA Great Lakes Challenge Oct. 25 followed by the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships Nov. 8.
Cook and his staff will have a mixture of experience and youth this season. With only one loss to graduation, the 2014 version of the men's team will have experience with seven returners on the squad. Returning to the squad this year are seniors
Cam Magro and
Justin Jewell; juniors
Dustin Brummel,
Brandon George and
Mason Przybysz; and sophomores
Cody Freeman and
Travis Sisovsky. Among newcomers, Cook greeted freshmen
Cameron Bredice,
Tanner Droste and
Mayur Patil to campus.
The Lady Panthers, on the other hand, will have more youth on the roster this year with the loss of three key runners to graduation. With no senior class this year, Cook will look for leadership in juniors
Katie Homan and
Tara Homfeld. While
Casey Lawson returns for her sophomore campaign, the women's team will look for
Brenna Hunter,
McKenzie Lounsbery and
Samantha Miedema to adjust to the collegiate ranks.
Davenport will be competing in the Knight Invitational for the fourth straight season. The men finished 13
th out of 27 schools while the women placed 14
th of 29. Magro led the way for the Panthers with a new program record time of 25:44.9, besting Dusty Prescott's previous record 25:54.00 set at the very same meet a year ago. In addition, the junior finished 24th out of 336 harriers in the event. Among returners on the women's side, Lawson ran the course in 19:37.0 to place 78
th out of 316 runners in her collegiate debut.
