ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A 24 point margin at halftime was enough to carry the #2 ranked Lady Panthers to a 92-70 win over Concordia in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon. The win lifts DU to 13-0 on the year and gives the Lady Panthers sole possession of first place in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) at 4-0.
Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis.) came off the bench and poured in a career high 23 points as the sophomore knocked down 5 of 7 shots from behind the arc in the 22 point win. Also posting double-digits in scoring were Riana Hensley (Toledo, Ohio) and Kallie Benike (Campbellsport, Wis.) who each chipped in 15 and Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) who finished with 11.
In a matchup that featured the last two undefeated teams in the conference, the host Cardinals jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and extended it to 9-2 just 3:26 into the half. Davenport however started to get some easy transition buckets and scored nine of the next 11 points in the next two minutes tie the score at 11-11.
That would only be the start of a huge first half run as Davenport went up by as many as 26 (45-19) with 3:14 remaining on a three-ball from Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis.). DU posted spurts of 10-2, 13-3 and 11-4 to lead by 24 (48-24) at halftime.
Concordia scored the first five points of the second half but after a deep three-pointer from Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.)with 17:03 to play, the lead climbed back to 24. The Cardinals, undefeated in conference play coming into today's game, then showed some toughness and used a 14-3 run to cut the margin to only 13 (56-43) with 14:29 remaining.
The three-point shot then became huge for DU as the Lady Panthers converted five long distance shots of their next 7 buckets to push the margin back over 20 points. The final two came on back to back possessions when Carrie Grubius (Kalamazoo, Mich.) hit two straight to put Davenport up 75-53 and the 22 point margin would hold up for the remainder of the game.
Sevcik's 23 points were part of a bench that outscored the Cardinals' subs 47-3. DU finished the day shooting just 38% from the floor compared to 43% from the home team. Concordia was forced into 28 turnovers and made just 3-12 from behind the arc.
Davenport (13-0, 4-0 WHAC) will now have an eight day break before traveling to New York to take on Daemen College. The 17th ranked Wildcats are fresh off an upset of #4 Indiana Wesleyan and are 10-2 on the year after a setback to NAIA D1 Shawnee State on Saturday.
The game vs. Daemen will be broadcast live on the DAN as will the matchup vs, Laurentian University on December 20 also being played at Daemen.
