GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The #1 ranked Davenport Panthers extended their win streak to a school record 22 games with an 81-61 win over visiting #14 Cornerstone. The Panthers are now 22-0 on the season and 8-0 in conference. The win gives the Panthers a three game lead in the WHAC with eight games remaining. The loss drops Cornerstone to 16-5 on the season and 5-3 in conference.
Davenport opened the game on a 7-0 run highlighted with a three by Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.). Cornerstone responded with a run to bring them within one at 9-8. Another three by Boehm capped an 11-0 run to widen the Panthers lead to 20-8 with less than 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Boehm had 10 of her 13 points in the first half.
Over the next eight minutes, Cornerstone outscored the Panthers 17-6 to pull within one at 26-25 with 2:42 left in the half.
Jeannie Closson (Parchment, Mich.), who had all 9 of her points in the first half, scored five straight during a 7-0 by Davenport to close out the half. The Panthers led the Golden Eagles 33-25 at the half.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first half with both teams under 35% from the field.
Cornerstone came out quickly in the second half and narrowed the Panthers lead to 33-31.
The Panthers lead hovered around five points for the first several minutes of the second half before Davenport went on a 16-3 run to extend the lead to 56-38 with nine minutes remaining. Julie Janish (Whittemore, Mich.) hit a couple clutch three's during this stretch for the Panthers.
Cornerstone made one last push, scoring five straight points to cut the lead to twelve but would never get any closer.
Davenport's lead reached as many as 23 in the 81-61 victory over Cornerstone.
Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.) led Davenport with 13 points, 7 steals, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis.), who went 3-4 from behind the arc, and Kallie Benike (Campbellsport, Wis.) each scored in double digits with 11 and 10 respectively.
While shooting just 31.6% from the field in the first half, the Panthers came back and shot 58.1% in the second and held Cornerstone to 36.8% for the game.
Melissa Veltkamp for Cornerstone had a game high 20 points in the loss. The Golden Eagles were without Robyn Veltkamp. She averages 12.5 points and 4.4 rebounds a game.
The win evens the all-time series against Cornerstone at eight games apiece. These two teams will meet again to close out the season at Cornerstone.
The Panthers will next be in action on Saturday when they host the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 1:00pm in the DU Student Center.
