Grubius’ 28 Points Lifts No. 7 Davenport to 81-64 Win at No. 15 Indiana Tech

Lady Panthers travel to Adrian next Wednesday for a battle with Siena Heights

Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Carrie Grubius exploded for eight made three-point field goals and 28 points to lift the No. 7 ranked Davenport Lady Panthers to an impressive 81-64 win at No. 15 Indiana Tech.  Davenport, who is now 7-2 on the year and 2-0 in league play, will travel to Adrian on Wednesday to battle Siena Heights.

In a game that Davenport trailed only once by a single point, senior Carrie Grubius had the hot hand with a game high 28 points on 10-15 shooting including a perfect 8-8 from behind the arc. The mark equaled her career high as she was joined in double-digits by Abbey Hengesbach with 14 and Abby Neff with 11.  Six different players scored at least seven points as Davenport shot 50% (30-60) from the field.

The host Warriors (6-3, 0-2 WHAC) held an 8-7 advantage at the 14:43 mark of the first half but on the very next possession, Grubius hit the second of her eight three-pointers to put DU up 10-8.  Only one more tie would keep things close as DU increased their lead by as many as 12 on a three ball from Neff in the opening half. Davenport got eight second chance points in the opening half to lead 38-28.

A 16-9 run to open the second half proved too much for the host Warriors to overcome as the Lady Panthers (7-2, 2-0 WHAC) increased the margin to 17 on a jumper in the lane by Abby Neff. After a three ball by Tech cut the lead to 14, DU got six straight points from Karlee Despres and Alison Bouman to hold their largest advantage of the game at 60-40. The closest IT got the remainder of the game was 12 at the 3:26 mark.

Davenport limited the home team to just 33.9% (21-62) shooting and forced them into 15 turnovers.

Post-Game Quotes - Head Coach Mike Williams

On getting a road win over Top 15 team: We played very well other than one bad stretch in the second half but we re-grouped after a bad decision on my part to change things up.”

On Carrie Grubius: “She did a great job of being a floor leader, her and Karli Harris…It was ironic to see her go miss a layup at one point because she made every shot from behind the arc.”

Post-Game Notes
