Grand Rapids, Mich. – Carrie Grubius set a new Davenport DU Student Center record scoring 28 points in Davenports 108-83 win over the visiting Cardinals of Concordia. The win improves the Panthers record to 26-0 overall and 12-0 in league play. Davenport puts their unbeaten record on the line next Wednesday when they travel to Madonna for a conference match-up.
Grubius scored 28 points for the Panthers breaking the previous scoring high for Davenport at the Student center by four points. Jeannie Closson added her name to the DU record book by breaking the school record for blocks in a career with 111 blocks after four tonight.
Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.) got the Panthers off to a quick start, nailing a three on the opening possession and after a layup by Concordia, Davenport scored the next 12 points to extend their lead to 15-2 just under 4 minutes into the game. Riana Hensley (Toledo, Ohio) scored 6 of her 12 first half points during this run.
Concordia made a run to pull within 7 with just under 8 minutes remaining in the half behind Brittany Simmons 13 first half points. Simmons, who finished with 31 points, set the record for most points scored in the DU Student Center by any player.
Davenport responded with a 15-0 run in which seven different players scored, to extend the Panthers lead back out to 20 at 55-33.
A late three by Abby Neff (LaGrange, Ind.) gave the Panthers their largest lead (23) of the first half and Davenport went into the locker room with a 61-31 lead. The 61 points Davenport scored in the first half tied their previous high for points in a half at the Student Center.
Davenport didn't waste any time to start the second half, quickly going on a 14-2 run to extend the lead to 75-42.
Concordia would get as close as 19 late in the second half before the Panthers extended the lead back out to 27 as Davenport won by a final of 108-83.
Raina Chambers (Pontiac, Mich.) (16), Abby Neff (LaGrange, Ind.) (12), and Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis.) (10) scored in double-digits for the Panthers.
Kallie Benike's (Campbellsport, Wis.) 10 rebounds, Karli Harris' (Fishers, Ind.) 8 assists, Riana Hensley's (Toledo, Ohio) 5 steals, and Jeannie Closson's (Parchment, Mich.)s 4 blocks where team highs for each categories.
Davenport's bench outscored Concordia's by 27 points and the Panthers scored 22 more points off turnovers than the Cardinals.
Several records fell on the night for the Panthers. Carrie Grubius (Kalamazoo, Mich.) made a record 11 field goals en route to her record 28 points. Her 6 three's tied a record for most three pointers made.
Davenport and Concordia combined for 191 points on the night to set a new student center record.
The Panthers will next be in action on Wednesday, February 9 when they travel to Madonna for a conference match-up that is set to start at 7:30pm. Going into tonight's action Madonna has an overall record of 9-10 and sits at 5-6 in conference.
