GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The fifth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team continued to add points on the board as for the second straight day the Panthers reached triple digits in their 114-61 victory over Holy Cross (Ind.) on the second and final day of their Holiday Tournament at the DU Student Center.
The senior tandem of
Karli Harris and
Emily Nielsen achieved their first double-double game this afternoon. Harris led the team with 16 points and tallied 10 assists while the fellow starter Nielsen manufactured 15 points and brought down 10 rebounds.
Harris also tied her career-best for most assists in a game and came close to tying the program's single-game record, which is 13, set by Jeannette Woodberry in 2006.
Alison Bouman also had a career-day on the hardwood Saturday, producing a personal-best 15 points along with matching both her season and career-high four blocks.
While the Panthers (13-0) shot a season-best 54 percent from the field, they also took advantage of charity points they were offered, making 31 to tie the program's all-time record set by the 2010-11 team.
The Saints only lead on the day was one point 27 seconds into the game. Harris used a layup to ignite a 12-2 run to give DU a 13-4 lead with 15:44. The Panthers did not allow the Saints to build a momentum until late in the half.
Davenport ended the first half leading 53-27 and shooting 50 percent. Nielsen led the effort by scoring 13 points while
Tiesha Stokes finished behind her with 10. Nielsen also paced the Panthers on the glass with seven. Harris went into the locker room with eight assists.
Kendra Cook got the Panthers started in the latter half, scoring seven points in the span of 1:09. While all five starters (Harris, Nielsen, Stokes, Cook and
Kayla Gross) played eight minutes in the half, the bench continued to play solid, scoring 36. Bouman led the effort in the half with nine points, followed by
Shaina Johnson with seven.
Davenport closed out the half with a 59 shooting percentage.
The Panthers will pull the curtain on both the 2012 and non-conference portions of the season schedule Sunday against NCAA Division III Finlandia. Opening tip is at 3 p.m.
Post-Game Quotes – Senior guard
Karli Harris
On the performance tonight: “Obviously I have to give credit to my teammates. Hitting shots is the biggest part of having an assist, getting each other open scoring-wise, but it was just fun to play with everybody.”
On if she pays attention to career records: “Honestly, I haven't known until coach (Karlee) Despres said something today. I don't really look much into the all-time stuff, but it's really cool to look back and see that I am having a good year. Again, I have to give credit to my team.”
On the team's defensive performance: “We've been emphasizing it a lot more in practice. We've been going a lot harder getting up and down and really trying to lock down teams and play a lot better on the defensive side of the ball.
