First Half the Difference in 64-44 Victory Over Aquinas

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lady Panthers picked up a key road victory over cross-town rival Aquinas 64-44 after outscoring the Saints 39-19 in the first half. With the win Davenport improves to 25-4 on the year and 15-2 in WHAC action heading into their final game of the regular season on Saturday against Cornerstone.

Leading the scoring attack for DU was senior Carrie Grubius with 15 points followed by freshman Abbey Hengesbach who chipped in nine. Eleven different Panthers found themselves in the scoring column with senior Abby Neff finishing with a career high ten rebounds to go along with her eight points.

To start the game DU took an 11-3 lead with eight of those points coming from Carrie Grubius. Aquinas was able to bring the game to within three at the 13:32 mark but a 11-0 run by the Panthers set the momentum for the rest of the half giving DU a 39-19 lead at the end of twenty minutes.

In the second half Davenport maintained a lead of no less than 16 with its biggest advantage being 24 points at two different occasions. In route to the 64-44 final DU outrebounded Aquinas 33-30 with the Panthers recording 13 second chance points compared to just four from the Saints.

DU's defense was on point tonight as they held Aquinas' leading scorer to zero points until the final 30 seconds of the game.

Davenport will finish regular season action on Saturday when they travel to rival Cornerstone for a 1:00pm match-up. The Panthers defeated the Golden Eagles earlier in the season 78-70 in double overtime.

Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Mike Williams

Williams on shutting down AQ's leading scorer Taelor Sander:Karli Harris wanted the match-up tonight and has the last two games. We put the focus on stopping her in practice yesterday and knew if we could keep her at bay then Aquinas would have a tough time getting going on the offensive end.”

Williams on DU's main focus heading into Saturday's game: “Our half court offense. We did a good job with their man but when they switched to a zone defense in the second our offense just kind of stalled and wasn't as effective. We will watch some film and really concentrate on that heading into Saturday.”
