GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Karli Harris scored 20 points and Emily Nielsen contributed 12 points as the senior duo led the No. 11 Davenport women's basketball team to a 87-68 win over Northwestern Ohio in a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening.

Despite being one point short from reaching her season-high, Harris also led the way for the Panthers (21-1, 13-1 WHAC) in the assists and rebounds with six each. Tiesha Stokes finished behind Harris with five rebounds but led the steals department, matching her season-best seven.

While the Racers (8-14, 5-9 WHAC) edged the Panthers in the rebound category 41-39, the Panthers edged the Racers in shooting percentage. The Panthers shot 44 percent from the floor while the Racers shot 42 percent.

Davenport and UNOH got off to a slow start from the opening tip until the 14:30 mark, when the Panthers built a 10-3 run led by Linnea Brandholm, Alison Bouman, Harris and Stokes to give the Panthers a 27-14 lead within 2:30.

Harris led opening half with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Stokes had seven points and recorded five of her seven steals in the first half as well.

Davenport's largest lead in the game was in the second half, Nielsen nailed a 3-pointer from a pass by Sevcik to take a 70-45 lead with 11:12 left.

Although she didn't have much playing time in the latter half, Nielsen led the effort with 10 points followed by Harris with nine.

The Panthers are back on the road for the next two games, starting with their archrival Cornerstone Saturday at 1 p.m.

Post-Game Quote – Head coach Mike Williams

On the difference between the two meetings this season: “I think we turned the ball over more than we did at their place, that was probably why the margin was a little greater there than here. Offensively, they are a really good team and we are really struggling defensively right now, especially against a team the way they play.”

On the glass: “We really don't look at defensive rebounds because we end up usually taking more shots, so they are going to get more defensive rebounds. Our goal is to keep (opponents) at 10 offensive rebounds a game and we gave up 11, so we didn't reach our goal tonight. Our goal was to get 20 on the offensive glass and we got 16.”

Looking ahead to Cornerstone: “It's going to be a much different game than tonight. Of course they are much more prepared and they are very good rebounding team. We're going to have to work on cleaning up the glass area.”

Post-Game Notes
