GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Kendra Cook scored 16 points and
Tiesha Stokes added 14 as the two starters played a solid second half to lead the 11
th-ranked Davenport women's basketball team to a 77-42 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference win at archrival Cornerstone Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Davenport (22-1, 14-1 WHAC) officially moves into a tie with Concordia for first place in the WHAC standings. Concordia is in non-conference action this weekend, allowing the Panthers to play an even number of games as the Cardinals.
Stokes and
Kia Frazier led the Panthers in the rebounding category with four each,
Karli Harris paced the Panthers in the assists column with four and
Kayla Gross matched her career-best four steals to lead the ballclub in that department.
As a team, Davenport shot .432 around the floor.
Although Cornerstone (14-9, 8-7 WHAC) tallied first pair of points to start the game, Stokes got the Panthers going with three straight layups to take a 6-4 lead. The Golden Eagles would play cat-and-mouse with the Panthers, using five points to cut DU's lead to 19-15 at the midpoint of the half. The Panthers started running away with the lead after
Alex Law, Gross,
Leah Sevcik and
Linnea Brandholm combined for a 14-2 run to take a 30-19 lead with 5:35 left.
Stokes closed out the opening half with a layup within the final seconds to extend DU's 10-0 run and enter the locker room with a 40-22 lead, the largest deficit in the half.
While the Panthers shot 43.2 percent from the field, the Panthers went 6-for-15 from beyond the arc. Stoke paced the team with 12 points, going 6-for-7 from the floor. The DU bench, led by Brandholm, scored nearly half of the Panthers 40 points in the first period.
The Panthers starting five, Harris,
Emily Nielsen, Gross, and Cook, exploded at the start of the second half, starting a 15-6 run to take a 55-28 lead with 14:02 left.
Davenport will have short rest as it will head to Adrian, Mich., to play at Siena Heights Monday at 6 p.m.
Post-Game Quotes – Head coach
Mike Williams
On the team's performance - “It's hard to explain. I think our kids this year have played two of the best games, both times against Cornerstone. Everything just clicked. We made shots, I thought we passed the ball really well; we were active with our hands defensively. The big thing we stressed was rebounding. I thought we did a good job rallying and rebounding the basketball as a team, because Cornerstone is a really good rebounding team.”
On his team's performance, past and present, at Cornerstone – “For some reason, we just played really well, the last two games against Cornerstone.”
On if he was worried about Cornerstone - “Oh yeah, ask our kids. We talked about our stretch, going on the road for four of five games. It's a tough stretch. This was an important game to get.”
