Williams Interview
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The third-ranked Davenport women's basketball team saw three players reach double figures but the Panthers couldn't recover from a large deficit as host No. 13 Concordia used two big runs in the second half to hand the Panthers their first loss of the season 75-69 in Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening.
Karli Harris led the way for the Panthers (17-1, 9-1 WHAC) with 14 points,
Kendra Cook had 13 points while
Tiesha Stokes added 10. Davenport held an edge in shooting percentage, combining for a 35 percentile, while the Cardinals (14-3, 11-0 WHAC) shot 34.
Both teams went scoreless for the first two minutes but Concordia drew first blood with a 4-0 lead at the 18:44 mark. The trio of
Tiesha Stokes,
Karli Harris and
Kendra Cook built a run that would give Davenport a 9-6 lead with 16:35 left.
The Cardinals used an 8-2 run to build a 17-13 lead with 10:15 left. Trailing 26-20 with 5:10 left,
Alison Bouman and
Brianne Woycehoski combined for five points to bring the deficit to just one at 26-25.
A pair of free throws by Cook with 16 seconds gave Davenport a 32-31 lead at intermission. Davenport shot 34 percent from the field while Concordia combined for 27%.
Linnea Brandholm led the way with a pair of 3-pointers for six points,
Brianne Woycehoski followed with five while Cook,
Emily Nielsen and
Shaina Johnson each added four.
The rebound category belonged to the Cardinals at half, edging the Panthers 26-23. VanKeulen led the Panthers with four rebounds.
Davenport got off to a solid start in the second half. Cook scored seven straight points and Stokes added a pair of free throws to build a 41-33 lead with 17:15 left.
But the Cardinals rallied from behind and used three straight 3-pointers, a free throw and a jumper to build a 52-47 lead at the 10:18 mark.
Concordia made the difference in the game with a 10-0 run to take a 64-53 lead.
Davenport tried to rally in the final two minutes in the game. Stokes scored six points, Brandholm added a 3-pointer and Harris had a pair of free throws, but the Panthers couldn't recover.
The Panthers return to the DU Student Center Saturday as they host Indiana Tech at 1 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport falls to 20-2 all-time against Concordia…The 32 points scored in the first half is the lowest in a game this season for Davenport...Davenport saw its streak of eight games out-rebounding opponents snapped as Concordia out-rebounded the Panthers 58-38.
