GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Brittany Johnson, Alex Law and Tiesha Stokes each recorded 16 points and the trio played a key role as the No. 2 Davenport women's basketball team never trailed in its 80-61 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory over Northwestern Ohio Wednesday evening. The win moves the Panthers back into first place in the league standings with the Racers, as both teams are 3-1 in league play.
Johnson, a junior who joined the Panthers (7-1 overall, 3-1 WHAC) this offseason from NCAA Division II West Georgia, set a season best in points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Law, meanwhile, brought down a career-best seven rebounds and Kia Frazier, who had eight points on the evening, also had a career day with eight steals and matched her personal best with six assists.
The Panthers got on the board first with a jumper by Johnson, and although the Racers (5-2, 3-1 WHAC) responded with a layup, it was the only tie in the game as the Panthers used a 13-0 run led by Johnson to take a 15-2 lead with 15:03.
Northwestern Ohio cut the Panthers lead to 23-17 with an 8-2 run at the eight-minute mark, but Linnea Brandholm collected five of nine Davenport points in the span of 2:20 to rebuild the lead at the 5:51 mark.
Davenport went into the locker room leading 42-29. Johnson caught up to her previous season best of 12 while Law had 11, including a perfect 3-for-3 in 3-point land, and six rebounds. The Racers did shoot 41 percent from the field to best Davenport's 38.
The Panthers led as many as 14 points, when Law's third 3-pointer in the half extended the lead to 37-23 at 2:43.
After enjoying Thanksgiving, the Panthers return to the court and will step out of WHAC play to host Saint Francis (Ill.) Saturday at 6 p.m.
