GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Coming off an 84-58 win over Northwestern Ohio in the opening round of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament, the sixth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team has a huge challenge in the semifinals against No. 4 Madonna, which is one of two teams to hand the Panthers a loss this season. The two schools will play each other for a spot in the WHAC Tournament final at the DU Student Center Saturday at 1 p.m.
Fans can watch the game live on the Davenport Athletics Network (DAN) with
Ken Clemens and Ed Keating on the call.
The winner of Saturday's contest will meet the winner between No. 2 Concordia and No. 3 Siena Heights.
The Panthers (28-2) got the WHAC Tournament started rocky in the first half against the Racers. But the tandem of
Karli Harris and
Tiesha Stokes got the Panthers going late in the half as the two ignited a 27-3 run that became the difference in the game. The senior and freshman combined for 29 of the 45 points scored in the first half. Harris would finish the night with a second consecutive double-double (19 points/10 assists) game, while the WHAC Newcomer of the Year Stokes added 17 points.
Meanwhile, Madonna (20-10) had five of its players reach double digits in points during Wednesday's 69-43 WHAC Tournament opening win against Cornerstone Wednesday. All-WHAC selection Kaylee McGrath came up short to a double-double but finished the night with 19 points and nine rebounds. McGrath, along with All-WHAC honorable mention selections Rachel Melcher and Shantelle Herring, are the only Crusaders to be averaging more than 10 points a game with McGrath leading the pack with 15.9.
In the last meeting between the two schools in Livonia, Davenport rallied from an 11-point deficit to tie the score with 25 seconds remaining, but four straight points by the host Crusaders to end the game were the difference the Panthers 78-74 loss to Madonna. Five players finished in double-figures for Davenport led by Stokes who scored 15 of her team high 19 in the second half but it was not enough to overcome Madonna who improves to 9-1 at home this season. Harris posted 14 points while
Kendra Cook and
Emily Nielsen finished with 12 each and
Alex Law 10 for DU.
