GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Alison Bouman scored a career-high 25 points and added nine rebounds and Alex Law went 4-for-5 from behind the arc to add 14 points as the Davenport women's basketball team used a strong second half to lead the fourth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team to a 87-57 win over Marygrove Wednesday night. The Panthers improve to 17-1 overall and sit at 10-1 at the start of the second half of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season.
Brittany Johnson also had 10 points, with six coming from the first half. Although she had six points, four assists and two steals, Kia Frazier matched her career-best eight rebounds.
Three Mustangs (2-16, 0-11 WHAC) reached double figures in point. Raeha Weaver had 16 points, including 14 in the first period, while leading scorer Ciara Moore and Janeesa Jameson both scored 12. Marygrove went into halftime shooting 45.2 percent around the perimeter but the Panthers held them to 25.6 in the second half.
Davenport had never trailed in the first half thanks to an 8-2 run at the start of the game. Although Alison Bouman's pair of free throws gave the Panthers a 26-10 lead, their largest in the first period, the Mustangs had found a way to get back into the game. Arielle Edwards collected seven of a11-3 Marygrove rhythm to cut the Panthers lead to 33-27 with 4:53 left.
The Panthers went into the locker room leading 43-35 and shot 44.4 percent from the field. The Mustangs shot 45.2 percent around the rim but committed 11 personal fouls. Davenport went 8-for-14 on the charity stripe in the opening period.
Bouman had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first to lead the Panthers in those departments.
After a sluggish first half, the Panthers returned to the floor with a different performance. Both teams would go back-in-forth with baskets for the first five minutes but Davenport would run away with the lead thanks to a 24-4 run in the span of nearly 13 minutes. Bouman and Law had eight and six points, respectively, to lead the Panthers during the run.
The Panthers will make a pair of visits to the state of Ohio for the next two games starting with Lourdes Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers downed the Gray Wolves 96-61 in their last meeting back in November, which was the home opener for DU.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport continues to remain perfect against Marygrove, improving to 9-0…After making three blocks to bring her DU career number to 75, Alison Bouman has passed former teammate Leah Sevcik for third on the school's all-time list…Alex Law's four 3-pointers made is the first time she reached that mark since Nov. 26 against Northwestern Ohio
