GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a career day for several members of the Davenport women's basketball team Saturday against No. 25 Cornerstone. Alex Law and Kayleigh VanKeulen scored 20 and 16 points, respectively, off the bench and Kia Frazier tallied 11 assists to lead the third-ranked Panthers to a runaway 83-57 win over their crosstown rival at the Student Center. The win also gave first-place Davenport a three-game lead over second-place Cornerstone in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings.
VanKeulen and Law combined for eight of Davenport's nine field goals from beyond the arc. Law finished with six while VanKeulen had two. After only shooting for 32.4 percent from the field in their last meeting with the Golden Eagles at Mol Arena last November, the Panthers (20-1, 13-1 WHAC) used the friendly confines of the Student Center to combine for a 54.1 percentage from the field while holding Cornerstone to 36.8 percent.
The Golden Eagles (15-6, 10-4 WHAC) held a 37-30 edge on the glass. Alison Bouman led the effort for DU on the boards with five.
The Panthers had to play without the services of leading-scorer Tiesha Stokes in the second half due to foul trouble. But DU's bench didn't find that a problem as they collected 51 points. Stokes finished the day with 14 points.
Although the Golden Eagles drew first blood in the matchup with a three, the Panthers would ignite a 12-2 run in 4:45 minutes to take a 12-5 lead. Brittany Johnson and Kia Frazier led that momentum with four points each.
Cornerstone cut Davenport's lead to one (12-11) with 13:39 left, but Kristina Cousins' layup would start a 16-2 momentum, highlight by three straight 3-pointers by Alex Law's two and Linnea Brandholm's one.
Davenport led by as many 20 points, when Kelly Dineen's layup bumped the Panthers lead to 47-27 with 1:42 left.
Law led the way for the Panthers in the first half, connecting four 3-pointers and a jumper for 14 points. Davenport also shot 52.9 percent from the field and went 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Panthers defense also was stingy as they forced 18 turnovers. They also held the Golden Eagles to a 35.7 shooting percentage.
Both teams would trade off baskets throughout the second half until a 13-2 run by Davenport put the game out of the Golden Eagles reach.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport improves its all-time record against Cornerstone to 14-9…Kia Frazier was one assist shy of tying Karli Harris and Brittany Johnson's Student Center record of 12, two shy held by Jeanette Woodbury…Law's six 3-pointers is a season-high
