GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Tiesha Stokes scored 23 points and brought down eight rebounds and Alex Law matched her career marks of six 3-point field goals and 20 points as the two sophomores helped the Davenport women's basketball team make a huge turnaround after trailing 32-31 at halftime to hold off Madonna 80-67 Saturday afternoon. The second-ranked and first-place Panthers picked up their 17th straight win to improve to 22-1 overall, 15-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

Alison Bouman also reached double figures in points, collecting 13 while tallying three of Davenport's seven blocks on the day. Kia Frazier finished the day with five points but paced the ballclub with six assists and steals each.

Davenport had trouble finding the bucket at the Student Center, shooting 12-for-43 (27.9 percent) from the field in the first half but the turnaround in the second half bumped the percentage to 37.2.

Madonna (10-13, 8-8 WHAC), meanwhile, finished the day with a 43.1 shooting percentage. Leading scorer Rachel Melcher had to play a majority of the second half with four fouls until she picked up her fifth with 3:44 left. She closed out her day with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Despite the offensive struggles the Panthers defense had remained intact, forcing 29 turnovers and collecting 21 steals.

Both teams would go back-and-forth lead early in the game but a 7-0 Madonna run gave it a 12-9 lead. Although back-to-back layups by Ali Bouman helped Davenport regain the lead, the Crusaders built the same momentum again to take a six-point lead with 10:57 left.

Davenport's defensive would hold Madonna without a field goal in the span of nearly five minutes. But the Crusaders snapped out of that funk and went the final four minutes in the half outscoring the Panthers 10-4 to take a 32-31 lead into intermission.

Just when it looked like Madonna could be running away with the lead at the start of the second half, Stokes turned the tide around with a layup and was immediately followed by a traditional 3-point play by Frazier, giving Davenport a 36-35 lead.

Madonna briefly regained the lead one last time with Erin Menard's layup but Davenport used a 12-3 run in the span of 2:30 to take the lead and never look back. Law led the momentum with eight points including two 3-pointers.

The Panthers hit the road again Wednesday as they take on UM-Dearborn for the first meeting of the season. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
